Into The Woods is an ensemble show that corrals the stock characters of fairy tale into a single narrative. Rapunzel (the admirable Alice Keedwell), Cinderella (Emma Odell), Red Riding Hood (Lauren Appleby) and the rest all cross the path of a childless Baker and his wife (Dominic Brewer and Rachel Bingham, both excellent) as they attempt to do the bidding of a boo-hiss Witch (Susan Kyd) and thereby reverse the spell that caused their barrenness. Eka Mazmishvili On … Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre

Eka Mazmishvili is the producer of the Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre of Tbilisi, one of Georgia’s foremost theatre companies. Founded in 1928 by celebrated director Kote Marjanishvili, the company have established a reputation for creating inventive theatre and for finding humour in the bleakest of situations. This December and January they return to London for a few days only to appear at the Arcola Theatre with two shows. Hilda runs in Studio 1 on 30 and 31 December 2008, and Le Ronde appears in Studio 2 on 2 and 3 January 2009. We were lucky enough to speak to Eka and get a glimpse into the history of the Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre, and this project. Read more

The Arcola Theatre claim that their new spring season line-up will be their most ambitious yet, but it may be a hard act to follow after 2008 saw them receive no less than ten nominations and awards, including the Southbank Show Diversity Award nomination, Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Award nomination for An Enemy of People and winning CBI Growing Business ‘Green’ Award. Set in the 1920’s after WW1, Britain has conquered and occupied Mesopotamia, freeing them from the Turks, and has put a Sunni King on the Throne. However it is re-named Iraq and thus here lies the parody for this tale. The boys of St Ethelred’s public school are all fathered by important figures in the military and government and as a result are vulnerable to a similar rebellion here on home soil. This is the story of such a rebellion complete with all the farcical escapades one could imagine. Read more

Staged with a new theme every two months, the one hour lunch time show includes three plays on the chosen theme.
