Well, tagged on to the end of the final The Scotsman Fringe First awards, the awards for the MTM Musical awards happened yesterday and we didn’t win in any of the five categories we was nominated for innit. It was a brilliant ceremony, however, and there was shown and rewarded some absolutely inspiring work. Makes me really wish I had been able to get out and see more, this year. So, no prizes for Aars but Laura Main, in the cast won a special commendation for her playing of Morag McMacMcMacMcMac, which was an unexpected bonus and well done her. Sweet flower of Aars. Deserved. And I’d like to extend that commendation to Barbera and Mike in the cast who are also fab. I’ll miss you guys, come Tuesday.
Barbershopera got two of the five, Funk it up about Nothing best production and Departure Lounge Best Music and my congrats to the winners. Bizarrely, however, the award for Best Book was not given to anyone, however, the reason given being that there was no book up to a standard worthy of an award, and that in witholding it, the panel would hope to send out the message that “The bar needed to be raised” for next year, an announcement which was both baffling and – to be honest – rather insulting. After all, the prizes are for Best not Perfect, and I suspect some hung jury stuff going on within the panel. But why not say so? Weird. Left a bad taste in the mouth.
However, the disappointment of all that was mollified by getting some more realy good reviews out for Aars and – more importantly – playing to another house of punters who loved it.
My daughter Cecily is up this week. She’s at the BRIT school and through loyalty, dragged me down to Pleasance Hut just now to see three ex-BRIT students whose company Fat Content has ashow called The Man I Cure. I wasn’t – uncharitable of me I know – expecting too much, but Christ, it was a lovely bit of work. Genuinely surreal, warm, funny, weird, utterly charming and stupidly moving. I’m sitting typing this in the courtyard just afterwords, with a inner glow from what was – for me – one of the highlights of my fringe. 11.45, Pleasance Hut. They are there ti monday. Go see it.
